One trick that will work well to help define the areas and make it looks less like one big blur. Is to take either a black brush or VERY dark shade of the color you are using and take size one brush, fairly high opacity, and just draw a thin little line of black/dark in between the two areas. Then with a tiny blur tool, size one or two, and very low exposure, between 5-10% smudge it in just a LITTLE bit. Then do the same thing on the edges of the two areas(NOT between them) except with either a white brush, or very LIGHT shade of the color. I used this technique when starting my god of death skin(which I quit because the wrap blows). See how the layers of bandage look clearly defined and separated? Dodge and burn are really not good for much other than hair. I did the purple hair and beard for him using dodge and burn. Study this picture and try the technique a few times until you get good at it, and use it if it suits you. I personally find it very useful.
