Alpha World takes players on a melee adventure high above the ground.

Everything about this map is standard melee but it is also quite unique.
AlphaWorld is intended to be a template or tool for Melee and Altered-Melee
map makers.

It comes equipped with many useful Files. Jass NewGen
is required to use this map in world editor because it uses 16 tiles.

Alpha World is 2 Player and has an optional camera system, mostly
for players to view the map.

The map contains the following:

  • 6 Goldmines,
  • 2 pairs of Waygates,
  • 2 Fountains,
  • 2 taverns,
  • 2 Goblin Labs, and
  • 2 Merchants.
AlphaWorld contains the following files and triggers:
  • Alpha Tiles / Cliff Alpha Tile
  • Distantland.mdx Ground model and texture
  • Option Menu Background .blp
  • map3map.shd file for 192x192 map
  • map3mapmap.blp
  • map3mapPreview.blp
  • map3mapMisc.txt (overwrites otherwise inaccessible gameplay constants)
  • Units/Stringcommands.txt (overwrites otherwise inaccessible tooltips)
  • LoadingScreen.mdx & FullScreen.blp (for custom loading screens)
You can right-click and replace these files to import your own.
BLP Lab v5.0 can be used to convert your .jpg files to .blp.

I have been unable to Locate the Creator of the Distantlands.mdx file
and it was not noted in the Whirlwind Citadels map description.
I re-made the ground image from a screenshot of (4)DeathRose.w3x.

One piece of the MUI Cam System came from The Flood's system.

War3mapMisc.txt brought to you first? by apoc0lypse.

SHDConverter 1.0 was used to create the shadow map (.shd) file that
removed shadows from the alpha tile terrain.

You are not limited to doodads and destructibles purely, you can also use Special effects as a tool on making lively environments.

The readily made melee assets were also useful and it's good to see those included in the map. It makes it easy creating a melee map in here but the down side is creating another types of map rather than melee types of maps or concepts that are not in lined with this assets.

Thanks for the review great Master of Hell :) I just want to highlight a few things. First, this is my first Melee Map (o_O) right? Oh ya, it is. Also, I did not make it with the intention of making the best melee map ever and therefore did not put so much work into the terrain as you correctly noted. The point was to give other map makers the tools to make the best Melee map ever. Honestly, I'm sick of seeing all of the crap in the melee map category and I would like to see people do more. Much of my work in this map involves triggers and scripts that could be included in most every map. This is supposed to be a learning tool - not a game map.

Please note: Smoking chimney doodads and tavern, working waygates, adjusted pathing on walls, fenses and rocks to create doodad structures like the Ice Throne, and the farmhouse flower beds. :)

This is an interesting idea, but it could have been executed a lot better. You should continue practicing your terraining skills. You use techniques such as alpha tiles and imports that would make me expect better terrain, but unfortunately your actual skills as a terrainer are that of an amateur. Imports are helpful, but they can't fill in the gap, you're going to have to simply practice and get better. I suggest making terrain repeatedly, and not releasing any of it until you've noticed a significant improvement. Please, improve your terrain.

My first tip to you is this: Use some common sense. Bricks don't just randomly grow out of the ground. If you're going to have manmade and natural tiles, you need to use them in a way that the manmade ones correspond with something that was manmade, and the natural tiles correspond with something that was natural; don't just mix them up like they're any other tiles. Terraining is pretty much a little bit of skill, but mostly just a willingness to put in the needed effort to change things that, in the back of your mind, you do know could be better, even if you won't admit it to yourself. You don't have to be a master to be able to see what's wrong with something and how it could be improved; anyone can.

You are totally missing the point. This is my first Melee map. It's not about the terrain which I know could be better. This map is about the resources, i.e. triggers, scripts, tiles, terrain models and internal tutorials. I should remove the "melee" category because it seems like that's all people care about. The purpose of this map is to help others - not to be a great map (though I think 2/5 is a bit harsh). It's a template. It will be useful for others to start off a map with and modify. It's a quick way to learn how to make preview/loading/minimap screens. Do you even know how to use a comandstring.txt? If so - great! Then you know this information will be of great help to terrainers and melee map makers. I know it could have better terrain, I wish someone would comment on the content rather than the style.

These things are all important for creating good terrain. I tried to put them all together in one map to help. Please, I don't need more comments about the terrain. Just because you want to focus on only one aspect of the map doesn't mean that everybody else has to only care about that as well.

When you make a terrain template... The terrain needs to be good.

Don't use "this is my first melee map" as an excuse. I don't care if you're learning and experimenting, I'm going to judge your resource the way I'd judge anyone else's. Sure, that's great that you're learning, but if you're going to upload something to the resource section, you should prepare it with what it needs to be useful to other people, and, for a melee map, that means terrain. Most people don't upload their first melee terrains. Those who do are usually rejected due to poor quality. Be glad yours was good enough to even be approved.

What you need to do is learn how to make better terrain, because that's your weak point. When you're making a resource to give to the public, you can't just ignore one feature and say "I'm not good at that". You either learn to do it right or find someone who can help you do that part right. Don't ask us to ignore such a crucial aspect of the map and focus on the one thing you did do right.

Yeah, you did a good job on some other things, and this is rather innovative for a melee map. That's where the two thumbs came from. If I had rated it based solely on the terrain itself, it would have only gotten one, because the terrain aspect really is that bad.

Don't ignore me just because I'm not praising the good part. If you wanted people to only look at the triggers, you should have just used the development forum, not the resource submission section for maps. But this section here is for playable products. Take the time to improve your terrain or have somebody else help you with it. You can play with triggers as much as you want, and they really can be a great part of a map, but for a melee terrain template map you really do need terrain.

Don't tell us not to comment on the terrain. That is the most important part of a melee map. If you have no intention of making a melee map, and intended for people to only look at the triggers and comment on them, you should have used the development forum. You say you want us to comment on the content. The terrain IS content. You inadvertently insult terrainers, accusing them of having no knowledge of triggers, lighting, and such, but the truth is that there are plenty of terrainers who are experienced with every aspect of the editor in order to make their terrain look as great as it possibly can. Maybe you should try learning from terrainers instead of expecting them to cater to you.

My original rating stands. If you improve this map, feel free to send me a message, and I will be happy to come back and increase my rating if the quality of your map has improved. Most people have been where you're at. I've been there, too. You're new, and you have talent, but you aren't willing to accept that your work isn't good enough yet. When you stop making excuses, not just to us, but to yourself, then you will move on and improve. When you're ready to make what's really on your mind, there are no excuses, there are only solutions to fix flaws before too many people can see them. Don't be upset when other people point out things that need to be fixed. Be glad that you have the opportunity to improve your map so that the next person who comes along will get to see something better.

You know, if you don't like us commenting about your terrain then I really have no idea what I part of the map I should rate. The multiboard, cam trigggers and weather triggers are nice but is it really that important that users like me should neglect the other aspect of the map and just applause you for those little things? I don't think so.

Anyway, did it not hit you that it will be faster for other mappers to import their own loading screen, minimap etc instead of removing yours before importing theirs? And who the hell still imports their MiscData? It should be put on your Warcraft 3 directory.

The reason why your way of improving melee maps received only 3 from the moderator and 2 from TLI-Inferno even though everything here is very clever is because your presentation didn't match the potential of what this map could have been if you putted much more effort.

Anyway, if you want me to review this as a melee map then just say so, I'll be happy to review an innovative melee map.

You don't know what is in front of you. You're dumb. You have 2,535 posts but only 377 rep. This means you write a lot of useless shit. I have 671 posts and 326 rep. Ya, that means almost every second time I post someone reps me for being helpful. You're just a troll. I'm not conceited, I did this to help others, I was frustrated that I had to learn all of this piece by piece and I wanted to save others the time and put it all in one nice package. This map is above all others, literally, it is off the ground. It leaves many below, like you, Inferno, who will never understand. For those who might want to learn to set cliff height, water depth, change move/stop/attack/patrol tooltips, or change the default in game text color - Please download this map and look through the .txt files in import editor. Everyone who wants to learn how to make a simple MUI camera system - This is for you. And for those who want to set terrain in the sky - well, you didn't need to read down this far to decide - you clicked download 10 minutes ago.

If you want a super-kick-ass melee map that is super balanced and visually stunning - Don't listen to Infernal, you want this map too.

I just downloaded this and had a look, since sky-high map making has always interested me.

I don't understand what's the fuss about bad execution. The terrain is above mediocre, weather system is rudimentary, but might inspire others to advance on dynamic weather.

But really, it seems that the key function here is the setting, which i consider to be brilliant.

Just the camera- and multiboard systems seem out of place, at least for melee-type maps.

Definitely a valuable piece of work.

Well, that's the old way. But the better way is ... using the file:

war3mapMisc.txt contains a complete list of gameplay constants. The editor does not have as many options. This file will let you change everything from cliff height to the color the hero icon flashes when attacked. It is really worth checking this stuff out, it only takes a minute and if you knew how already, then great, but you might learn something that you'll be super excited about too.

EDIT: war3campaignMisc.txt is better because it does not interfere with the old data but only replaces the lines of code that are changed. Also, war3campaignSkin.txt should be used rather than war3mapSkin.txt.
