Activateable Aura

How might one go about making an activateable aura? Kind of like Leshrac's Pulse Nova in DotA, if you've played it... I don't want the aura to affect the hero that is using it, and I want it to drain mana while activated.
 
I dont know the Pulse Nova in dota.
I'd think the general idea in there is that you use immolation as your dummy spell. It can be activated/deactivated and it drains mana. You detect when the immolation is activated and then create a dummy unit with the aura you want.
 
@ paskovich: I already know how to trigger, I just wasn't sure about how to go about making one and I was curious as to how others would do it.

@ DragoonZombie: What do you mean by 'hide it with a spellbook'?
 
Put your aura in a spellbook ability, then use action : Player - Disable spellbook for Player . Then if you put the spellbook ability to the hero, it will not display the skill icon but the aura still have its effects.
 
Ok, but what is a spellbook ability? I've never heard of that term before... Is it an ability that is attached to a spellbook item or something?
 
the spellbook is a item ability where you can put abilitys in it.
Like, when you click on "Build" you get a new list with buildings. Its the same just with abilitys instead of buildings.

And when you put abilitys in the spellbook and turn it off for a player you cant see the spellbook anymore but the ability IN the spellbook still exists.

simply search for "Spellbook" in the item ability category and play a bit with it.

The Pulse Nova was probably based off Immolation. After all, what is the ability that damages nearby targets and drains mana? I believe there are triggers for it, though, since there were some bugs with the mana-drain before. So, unless I'm mistaken with the effect, it is Immolation.
