Honestly the best way to learn about terraining is by doing. When I started off I looked at some of the maps created by Blizzard and tried to copy the style the best I could. It took a lot of tinkering and trial and error to figure things out. There are some great tutorials on this site too. They can help you with the little tips that make everything work so much better. For example: when you select a doodad and press ctrl+page up or ctrl+page down you can move doodads up and down. You can also use home and end to make them bigger and smaller of the x and y axis and use page up or page down to make them taller or shorter on the z axis.

There are tons of tips like these that will help you out. You will also find that as you learn new things you tend to go back and change things... a lot (at least I did)

My best advice I can give you is to learn by doing, and hit up the tutorials, they are really informative.

Good luck mate.

PS looking at other people's terrain can often give you inspiration

These things are for a RPG:
I recommend you to create new doodads based on mushrooms/shrub/ whatever has no pathing (or you could remove the pathing manually) and make the fences and other doodads with no pathing, that means you can place doodads wherever you want. Do the same with the walls. Make them bigger, same with rocks
Also, do something with those trees. Increase their size and press ctrl+page down a few times on the ones on the edge. The warcraft trees have a weird bottom (i think you noticed)
If you want to make grass without using imports create a doodad with no pathing and use the shrub or river rushes model (make sure the river rushes don't contain the cattail plant) and set its color to something like 150-255-150 to make it green
The road looks weird, try to get more grass on the left side and mix more types of terrain. Also, lower the terrain along the center of the road. (outside your village)
Inside the village the cobble road looks awkward because it goes over the grass. Go to Advanced>Modify Tileset and move the Road tile to the left until it is before the Grass Tile
You can also rotate units and doodads by clicking on them and holding Control button while left-clicking to where you want the unit or doodad to face towards.
There are a few wells there that make no sense, try removing them or putting them somewhere else.
I hope this helps
