#1: Create a custom ability based on Spell Book. Put the ability you want to hide as one of the spells contained in the Spell Book. Give the Spell Book ability to the unit, then, disable the Spell Book ability for the unit's controller. The unit will get the benefit of the Combat ability (because it's not disabled), but the Spell Book icon won't be visible (because it is disabled).
Player - Disable (Spell Book) for Player 1
#2: Give the Combat ability to the unit, but set Art - Button Position for it to (0,-11). This will store the icon in a position that is outside the visible command card, but relatively stable (unlikely to cause issues such as crashing).
Jake Kessler is right. Not sure why it would be impossible given the 1.28a patch notes:
Fixed command cards to be hidden again with special coordinates (0, -11) and (-2147483648,
-2147483648) within CommandFunc.txt; invalid coordinates will now be ignored
