I did so: "Retail\units\human\footman". There I gave your textures names like the original infantryman files.

As far as I understand, the problem is that the editor has the option to remove "war3mapimported/" in the import path. But when replacing the standard infantryman (not through the editor, respectively), it is impossible to change the import path (or I do not know how)

you need to add the .dds files to \Warcraft III\retail (the .dds files GO directly in the retail file not the "Retail\units\human\footman" )
You add the .mdx files into the "Retail\units\human\footman" you rename them to footman and footman_portrait
You add the .dds file into the "Retail" and just leave them there
