Literally just finished replaying Unreal so probably won't be doing it again for a while. xD What I'd prefer is a decent renderer that has actual feature parity with the original ones but doesn't run water ripples at 1000fps on a modern machine... (All the ones I could ever find messed up either fog or transparency or both.)

The problem is Epic Megagames only gave access to the 'higher' part of the rendering code, and not to the 'lower' part of it. Meaning, some things can simply not be achieved with the drivers we already know:
- the drivers which come with the Unreal 2.27x package
- http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ (for UT99)
- http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/ (untested)

However, maybe there is still hope for a modernized visual Unreal Experience someday, with Unreal Redux:

Yeah, I've tried both Kentie's and UTGLR and they're both missing features. :( Guess I need to fire up a Win98 VM and go in the old fashioned way... xD

Which hypervisor would you use for that? Just curious...

Fyi, with WMWare Workstation Player 15.x, one would not get any hardware acceleration at all (be it 2D or 3D) with a W98 guest. Therefore, it is imho better to use a XP guest, which has both 2D and 3D hardware acceleration in VMWare 15.x

You could also set up a W2000 guest in said hypervisor, but in that case one must also edit the vmx file in order to enable 3D hardware acceleration for that OS.

Can't remember how I did the Win98 one last time, but it was in Windows 7... And yeah, it had no hardware acceleration so 3D was impossible. I do have XP Mode installed here too, though when I tried to play Atrox in it (2D RTS) it just refused so not sure that's viable either (I know XP Mode is designed for desktop tools rather than games so not entirely surprising).

Never tried VMWare at home but have previously strugged with it at work. Is it even free?

VMware Workstation _Player_ is free for non-commercial use, and it does not require a licence, nor expires (contrary to VMware Workstation Pro).

Regarding Unreal 2.27x, the final version of the Oldunreal Patch compatible with Windows 98 is 2.27d iirc. Also, testing anything which requires DX10 or above (like the drivers by Kentie) would require at least Vista as a guest.

If you are using XP mode in Windows 7, then you are most probably using a flavor of Virtual PC

... which indeed has a limited use for gaming.

In case you would need it, I can provide you with lots of advice, files and tricks regarding the setting up either of a W2000 or of a XP VM in VMware Workstation Player.

In fact, I could write an extensive tutorial about it in our Computer Tech sub-forum, as I have been extensively exploring that subject since the last six months.
