Dictatorships have been maintained in various societies accross the globe for thousands of years. Communism too, ultimately transformed into a dictatorship as well. You can't say it failed in every instance.

Dictatorships are mainly military control based whilst monarchies also had religion somewhere around to say something, for instance. However, newer monarchies were more democratic based, ministries and all that whilst dictatorships usually have one person saying the most.

Not all monarchies are constitutional / parliamentary monarchies. Historically, monarchies have usually been authoritarian states. Monarchies are a subcategory of dictatorships as well, given that there is one, unremovable person on top, who has the final say on every major issue.
