Dude, don't kill yourself with StarEdit anymore. Use StarCraft II's Galaxy Editor. It even has most part of Warcraft III in it now: Starcraft 2 MAJOR Editor Update
And Wings of Liberty is free to use.
For now, I am making my Gothic RTS as a SC1 mod, because the Gothic fans said they liked the visual style. It seems fitting to convert an RPG from around 2000 into a strategy game by using an RTS from around 2000 as basis. They both transport a similar "spirit".
