Maybe it was for a mele attack animation. And that explains the dagger in the Archmage skin, it probably looks better than most of the weapons that were made for the final game.

And heh, the Sorc was black haired in the alpha.

@stein123 that's what I was thinking. Well, that's how it was in the previous Warcraft RTSs, the Conjurer and the Mage. Even the Cleric and the Paladin were humans. Now, the Priest is an elf and so is the Sorceress while the Paladin which is now a hero remained human.
