I don't know if that's possible, pure speculation:

How about if you give him the head of the Chaos Warlord?
The model itself is based on the Blackhand from Warcraft 1 and would perhaps give it a nice little hint at the older destroyer-concepts.
(Maybe the chest straps also fit. They look a bit more boss-like than Garthok's.)

As far as I know, and in the opinion of other modders, it's a nightmare to import a head to a body because of the animations.

However I think you are right about integrating the old concepts into the new ones. that's why I also made a version with his deer antler helmet. I would make this version available too, at the same time as this one
