Zones, like in the Rexxar Campaign (How?)

So, I'm creating a ORPG right now and I need some help. If you've ever played the bonus orc campaign in frozen throne, you should know about these. If not, I'll tell you. On parts of the map you start out in, there are zone barriers that will move you and your hero to another map and allow you to continue there, and you can go back through them to return. This travelling is obviously separated by a loading screen. So the questions are twofold.

1: How do you make zones like that?
2: How do you carry over a hero from one map to another?

1. campaign with "zones" being unpickable from the campaign screen
2. gamecache

You basically store like rexxars health, mana, level, xp, spells, if he has misha with him, if so her health etc and load it in different map
