I'm not much of a WoW player, in fact I sort of got off Warcraft when it was released. But reading through bits of information from the WoWWiki, I was thinking about the possibility of implementing the events into a whole campaign. For example, the Battle at Icecrown could easily have been a full campaign for the humans, and the War in Outland a Blood Elf campaign.

Now I can theorize all I want, but I ask you guys; is this even possible, considering the wealth of new races available? Not to mention the focus on adventurers instead of armies in the actual lore?

1) Yeah, it's quite possible - there is an enormous suprlus of all kinds of blood elves and undead and more than enough Alliance and Horde models.

2) There're still armies at work - adventurers are more of a special force, striking at key individuals and such.

In fact, remaking WotLK as a proper campaign (with a proper dark feel, like in TFT), conquering the path to Icecrown step by step would be epic =)

Where do we start, though? I was thinking of starting with Classic, splitting the game into each expansion. However, I've no idea about the major conflict in it; BC had the War in Outland, then the Lich King, then there's Deathwing and the Cataclysm. What was the first big campaign?

War of the Shifting Sands, I suppose. But there also were war against Ragnaros and Nefarian and first Scourge Invasion.

If someone could convert the events in WoW to RTS format that'd be epic! In fact... that might be a project I'll work on in the future... once I'm better with triggers and stuff.

As for Vanilla, there wasn't much of a campaign there. Basically it was the adventurers making names for themselves battling the forces of evil that were already there, such as Onyxia, Nefarian, Kel'Thuzad, etc. TBC is when things started getting more story-driven.

So basically we start in Outland? Makes more sense.

This is in its very early stages, so don't expect any maps soon. I'm still splitting stuff into campaigns and missions.

No, we could still do a Vanilla campaign, but as I said, it would be more along the lines of the Adventurers making names for themselves. But we'd focus on major events, such as the rise and fall of the Defias Brotherhood, the fall of Onyxia and Nefarian, and the events surrounding the original Naxxramas for the Alliance-side campaign. I don't know what to do for Horde side, but maybe that's what research is for. :P

On the other hand, we could probably get away with doing an RPG campaign based on the World of Warcraft comics, specifically King Varian's story. Those seem to tie in with the events of Vanilla pretty well.

I drafted a quick overview of the Dark Portal battle. Tell me what you think.

I: The Portal Opens (Alliance)

-Prologue: Doomlord Kazzak opens Dark Portal using relic, rejoins Legion in Outland. Doomguard Kruul attacks cities in Azeroth, proclaiming the return of the Legion, alerting both factions to Nethergarde Keep.

-Alliance fend off attacks at Nethergarde Keep, helped by Argent Dawn
-Defend Nethergarde Keep until the Argent Dawn arrive (survival, waves of undead. Probably TD)
-Alliance and Horde forces, under Watch Commander Relthorn Netherwane (player) and Warlord Dar'toon (ally) force themselves through the Dark Portal, repelling the Legion's forces.
-Destroy the Legion camps
-Rendezvous with Commander Duron and Lt. Gen. Orion at the Stair of Destiny, establish foothold in Honor's Hold.

-Reach Honor's Hold
-Find and rescue the soldiers from the Legion (Side)
-Legion attacks under Pit Commander using teleporters, joint defence under Justinius the Harbinger & Melgromm Highmountain
-Defend Honor's Hold
-Kill the Pit Commander
-Find Commanders Kingston & To'Arch
-Destroy the Fel Reaver camps and the Teleporters
-Invasion Point: Annihilator (Side)
-Slay Warbringer Arix'Amal
-Shut the Legion Gate
-Cinematic: Air Raids over great Legion citadels and forges, carried out by Commander Kingston. Netherwane, Dar'toon and a small contingent of troops each arrive at the Throne of Kil'jaeden
-Defeat Kazzak the Supreme

That would make quite a large mission, but still good nonetheless.

Vanilla could make an interesting campaign aswell. Two even. One for Horde, one for Alliance. Or even four - one additional for Night Elves and one more for the Forsaken. Something like this:

Chapter 1: Defias Rising

Map would feature most of Westfall and parts of Elwynn (namely Goldshire and perhaps Northshire Abbey. Goldshire would periodically spawn rescuable units (similar to low-level WoW characters); Northshire after a quest would become a sanctuary of sorts, heaing nearby units and having strong defenses)
The hero with a small force starts in north-eastern part of the map, near a sign "Road to Stormwind". There he meets a wounded messenger from Northshire, which is besieged by Defias (side quest). If the player helps to defend the abbey, it becomes a sanctuary.
Main quests would involve destroying several Defias lieutenants in Elwynn, reporting to Goldshire to gain reinforcements, reaching Sentinel Hill to save it from Defias siege (it then becomes your base and you gain Gryan Stoutmantle as a powerful hero), checking several Westfall farms and solving people's problems there (aka Defias). Last quest would involve destruction of a larger defias camp, where a prisoner would be taken, who then would tell the hero of the Deadmines (cutscene)
Quests about farms could be side quests and they could give certain allies in a further mission.

Chapter 2: Siege of Moonbrook

The first quests of the mission would be about cutting Defias lines of supply, killing their sabotage parties, setting up siege camps with trebuchets and so on. Stealthy Defias would also come and try to burn the trebuchets and barracks. Then, after some heroic cutscene with Stoutmantle shouting an ultimatum to the Defias, it would revolve to an actual battle. The whole mission will be less like a strategy and more like a wargame - you have a set army and must use it carefully to complete the quests. Of course you get reinfoircemnets for the final battle. Stoutmantle and his people (and all buildings) are "allies", so not under player's control.
The mission finishes with burning of that large warehous and revealing the cave-like entrance into the Deamines.

Chapter 3: Into the Dead Mines

And RPG-like mission. You only have your hero, some allies gained from side quests in first mission, an elite unit (some Stoutmantle's lieutenant of something) and some regular units. There could also be some quest-givers, that would give side quests and join you when you complete those quests (the quests would mirror Deadmines quests from original WoW). The main quests would be just two - reach the entrance to to the ship cave and another to kill VanCleef. When you reach the cave entrance, the reinforcements arrive (not many regular units and perhaps another elite), the great ship starts shooting at you (explosions at random points - you gotta watch out for cannonballs) and you engage in battle with army of pirates and mr Smite. After Smite is dead, you and your remaining forces are teleported to the ship. Cutscene shows you "jump" on it and the sea-gates of the cave crumble, as a number of Stormwind ships come in. Then you must face VanCleef and his elite Blackguards on his ship (separate piece of map), while cannonballs land and set the ship on fire (dodge cannonballs again and don't stand in fire). When VanCleef is dead, you gotta loot his head and get the hell out of there before the ship explodes (final battle is sort of timed). The mission ends with a cutscene of Stoutmantle exposing VanCleef's head on a stake and shouting to people, that it will be safe in Westfall now. As he talks, a messenger begging for help arrives from Redridge.

Chapter 4: Blackrock and Roll, Again!

The name's obvious reference to two original RoC missions =)
The player gets control of Lakeshire and must reinforce defenses of the city and find materials to repair the bridge to be able to cross it (dragonlings arrive from across the bridge and their source cannot be destroyed until it is fixed). The twist of the mission would be a need to sacrifice units periodically to an army that fights blackrock armies in Burning Steppes. If the player doesn't send units regularly, he will be overrun but great army from the north. The quests would be simple - destroy main Blackrock bases and sack their castle.

Chapter 5: Steppes of War and Ash

Mission starts with a cutscene showing Magistrate Solomon meeting with Morgan. Morgan pleads help in her fight with Dark Iron Dwarves.
Your tasks involve establishing a base and destroying various Blackrock outpost - Dreadmaul Rock, Pillar of Ash and the like.
Morgan's Vigil is an allied settlement, however Morgan is focused on fight with Dark Iron Dwarves. Side quests are focused on helping Morgan defeat the Dark Irons and completing them all will grant the player control over Morgan's forces.
When all opposing forces are destroyed, the mission ends.

Chapter 6: Marshal Windsor

The hero and Morgan descend into Blackrock Depths with a small strikeforce to find and free Marhsal Windsor. Dark Irons have buildings and traps in the tunnels, but Morgan can capture their cannons and tanks, use their armouries to upgrade her troops and can free prisoners to increase her army. Most BRD bosses are featured as side-quests, but they drop powerful loot and items similar to Glyph of Ultravision - which can be used in later scenarios to gain an advntage.
At the same time, forces of Lakeshire and Morgan's Militia are trying to hold out in a small camp, built on the other side of the Blackrock Mountain, attacked by waves after waves of Dark Irons from the Cauldron. They can try to reach Thorium Brotherhood in order to gain powerful upgrades and new units. (Units in BRD don't benefit from TB upgrades and units in Searing Gorge don't benefit from BRD upgrades)
The mission ends with Marshal Windsor telling the hero and Morgan that Lady Prestor is in fact Onyxia disguised and that they must confront her. Morgan declines help, claiming that she has to reclaim the Burning Steppes from what is left from Blackrock Clan.

Chapter 7: The Great Masquerade

The mission starts with the hero, Marshal Windsor and their army arriving at Elwynn Forest. They have to make way to Stormwind, but on their way they are constantly attacked by Defias first, then orcs and ogres, then even black dragonkin. When they reach Eastvale Logging camp, they can make a base there and try to amass more forces to reach Stormwind.
Once they finally reach Stormwind, there's a cutscene of the Great Masquerade quest and then the player joins fight with the dragonkin. When all dragonkin are defeated, Bolvar congratulates you and campaign ends =)
(I thought that since in lore Onyxia is slain by Varian, it would be silly to let the player kill her)

My idea is to show stories of six different heroes (Human, Night Elf, Orc, Forsaken, Troll and Dwarf) and then tie them together in campaign about war of the Shifting Sands (when Horde and Alliance worked together) - somewhat in Heroes of Might and Magic style =)

Feel free to usethis ideas, I don't havetime for them anyway.

more to come, gotta go now =)

^^ The plan for the Dark Portal mission looks very good, but I think it could be split in two and work just as well. I would suggest having the first mission go up to the rendezvous with the commander, with the second consisting of only the defense against the Legion and ending cutscene.

^ How many dungeon missions will there be per side?

I like the idea, btw the naxxramas thing should be from the forsaken campaign, and eventualy somtime during all of this forsaken shud formally join the horde(since lore never really stated exactly WHEN sylvanas had chance to say hello to thrall).

As for the "adventurers" issue heres an ez solution for things like *20 ppl killed illidan* or watever, replace adventurers with armies where they fit, remove adventurers altogether, Example:

The fall of the lich king, replace the *adventurers* with argent crusaders. A more complicated matter is say onyxia, replace adventurers with the armies of stormwind(i chose stormwind in specific cuz they were the ones affected, therfore they wud be the ones that strike back).

Well, we can have a campaign with Varian LEADING an army, since really there was one if you pay enough attention to the art in the comics.

In certain parts of the lore Onyxia was slain by Varian. But if you do a few certain quests and read a few certain things (in diremaul or something?) it still references (up until cata?) to Onyxia being alive and that the player is the one who has/wil/did slay Onyxia.

BTW GL with the project.
