I made a custom spell based on "Rune area heal/mana regain", but it affects both allies and enemies. Obviously, I'd like to make it heal allies only.

Look at the allowed targets.

Think of a spell that has similar behavior to what you want and copy / use its targets as a reference.

For example, Keeper of the Grove ultimate: Tranquility. Or the scroll of healing item ability.

Do note that some abilities have very strange Targets Allowed field behaviour. Unlike in StarCraft II, Targets Allowed in WC3 is very prone to odd behaviour and unexpected results. Some abilities just cannot be made to work with certain target types, eg Holy Light cannot hit friendly Undead or enemy Living.

I prefer to use the passive spell of Healing Wards (Orc) since it works for allied units only by default. About mana, you can create a custom spell based on mana regeneration (similar to Brilliance Aura) then combine them togethe.
