in a skin how do u noe where goes where ... like if u have a custom model ... and u wanna skin it ... how u now where fits into where?

UV mapping is the process of saying what part of the model goes where on the texture. You can look at the UV map using vertex modifier on this page. The first two or so tutorials on that page will tell you how to get the model open.
