Newgen can extend the map bounds to 480x480 because it's actually possible for the game engine to handle that map size. The 480 limit is hardcoded, unlike the smaller "limit" the regular world edit allows. That's why you can't extend it further than 480x480.

There are several answers on that forum, but all of 'em say it's impossible to actually increase map size over 480x480.

WC3 is not designed to be bigger than the 200*200 odd they provide you with initially. Bigger maps put more stress on the game engine until the game litterally lags with the best of computers. A 1024*1024 map will probably be unhostable due to the map and shadow data lone being more than 8 MB.

Try making multiple maps if its an RPG. PvP maps should not need that much space.

I agree with Dr Super Good but it is possible to create a map as that size, only thing is why people say its bad is because of what DSG has said... It is like putting a aircraft carrier on your back. If you knew how to get the main code and everything then it would be possible for not so laggy.

RTS games are not designed for large maps. Even supreme commander 1 had problems with the huge maps (why they were removed from 2).

MMORPGS and RPGs like TES oblivion use dynamic loading models and special data structures to allow for only the bare minimum to be loaded that is needed for that area (well not so much TES oblivion). As such you can have near infinitly sized maps in such engines without worrying about slowdowns due to only what is needed is being loaded.
