WHY!? Why must you have it quick? Nothing comes easy. Nothing comes without shortcuts. Read the FAQ, read tutorials. That's what teaches you. I did that, AND did my own work, and I am at a relatively high non-mod position here, along with my competent fellow people.

My only, and most important tip is, experiment

Bah... You are asking for help and still, you put the conditions? I don't like this attitude. Don't continue like this or else people will stop helping you. Anyway, back to your question, first, start working with the WE. Learn how to work with the Object Editor and with the Triggers. You can learn this only by practicing. Nobody will be able to make a tutorial on how to learn all the triggers... They are very vast. Still, some specific ones are needed for spells.

Now, once you know these two things, go to Spells section into this site and get some spells. Preferrably select only Trigger Enchanched ones because if you are just a beginner in making spells, JASS is something impossible. Start looking upon these spells and see the triggers used. Try to figure out how they were used, where, and especially why. Then test the spell and see if it has the same effect you expected. If you see the spell too complicated leave it behind and try another one. Then come back to it once you get simpler ones.

Omg, so just press a couple random numbers? NO. You are supposed to do them accordingly. Nothing comes easy, and if it seems too hard, then don't do it. You're not going to die if you don't make maps, and it especially won't make you popular on BNet (especially if you're palying Lordaeron

the best advice so far was from daelin and i'll add on. First of all, when you start out, your skills are going to be simple, plain, and probably not very exciting. Perhaps you might want to simply try making new skills from already existant ones to see how some spells work (this helps when you get better). Granted, the begining is usually a little boring, but the good part is as you make more and more (and snoop around the spells section to find some new tricks on how stuff is done) you're spells will gradually increase and become better.

You already have an advantage a lot of spell makers didn't. Version 1.17 of the map editor, which has a lot of extras the previous ones did not.

So your first thing to do is make as many creative spells as you can in the editor alone without triggers. Try and mimic spells you've played with in other video games and the like. Try to combine spells for different effects and see with you come up with. It's pretty nifty what you can make if you try. Once you've had some practice with spells and learnt how they work it's time to move on.

Second line of business is starting off with triggers. Now when you first see peoples triggers, you might be baffled, maybe not but play around with them to see what they do. Eventually as you learn the basics, you'll all-of-the-sudden have a new field of spells you can make. When you start making more complex triggers, it's best to test one thing once to make sure it works before moving on. Then you learn how to use more and more specific functions (like the use of vairables, arrays, and other stuff such as dummy casters) functions until you've mastered all the functions and are able to make full spells testing only the finished product.

This is the stage i'm at since i;ve never bothered to learn JASS but i find there are very few spells i cannot do with triggers.

Now JASS is the highest level of game editing. This is where you can really change stuff up way more than triggers or basic map editing. Although most spells can be done effectively via triggers, JASS is mostly for custom systems. Check in the JASS secton and you'll find a whole bunch of systems that are used to change the gaming dynamics, or simply solve some irritable problems. I really haven't tried using JASS but i've heard it takes a while to master, but is far better once you do figure it out. If you take a look at the difference it's quite astonishing.

Anyways, these are the three levels that you go through and you seem to just be starting level 1. So follow these tips and everyone elses and you should eventually be able to make great spells.

Remember, this is NOT just changing some numbers. If you think it like that, then i'm not sure if you'll get too far into triggers or even past making interesting spells.

One more thing to mention about learning JASS...

Once you have mastered the Object Editor and mostly the WE... And that includes triggers as well. You have to be a MASTER of triggers... Well, understand them very well. You have to be able to do most of the spells without requiring JASS at all. This doesn't include multi-instanceability. You don't have to be able to make multi-instanceable in order to learn JASS. So, know how to do 95% of spells WITHOUT requiring JASS. JASS makes spells more real, helps you add better effects and assures multi-instanceability.

After you have reached this step at triggers you have to know the basis of computer programming. This means that you should shallowly be able to program on a computer. C/C++/C#, Pascal, QBasic, Javascript, Java, PHP or any other similar programming code is useful in comprehending JASS. HTML is not included... If you don't know ANY programming language I am afraid it will be harder for you to understand.

And btw Drain Pipe, awsome advices. I think we could do a tutorial about how to learn JASS. LOL...

you obviously don't seem like what we've told you seems to be important.

BTW Daelin, i actually basically stated what i did to learn how to make spells/triggers, but i've never actually used JASS so it would be mostly yourself doing a tutorial. Perhaps we can do a ttriggering/JASS tutorial because i know quite a bit with triggers (I'm probably in the 90% range or higher)

Spammish are we?

Last tips:
-Practice makes perfect: experiment with spells. You can't just make a spell without any effort
-Use some flashy effects
-Triggered spells are easy. Experiment and practice. If the game crashes, don't think "I messed up on the spell 100 times." Think "I learned 100 ways to crash the game" (Based on Thomas Edison's perserverance)
