you can change the name of the player but you can not change the name of the hero
replacing the hero with another one with different name and copying items/experience is a possible way around it

I believe if we replace a unit, EXP and items are kept as default (no need to save it into a variable).
The only thing you need to care is the unit's level ability when replaced
