If you are currently working on a map in WE and your current warcraft III version is, say 1.24b. Will it work for a warcraft 1.24b version only? How do you know the version compatibility of your map?

Only way to test your map. Here're some major handicap for patches though :
[1] Patch 1.17 isn't compatible with 1.16 and below (Presumed)
[2] Patch 1.24 isn't compatible with 1.23 and below, except if they don't use Return Bug (Clarified)
[3] Patch 1.26 isn't compatible with 1.25 and below, if they posses certain traits (Unverified but happens sometimes)

Only use the latest version of WC3. There is a reason Blizzard made patches and that was to improve the game, fixing exploits and bugs. They typecast exploit was especially bad and although it is still not fixed, the main problem (code arrays) is (I think).

Although with simple maps there should not be any compatibility problems upgrading versions, more complex ones can run into bugs due to various mechanic changes.
