iPhone SDK

So I got a new Mac Mini for christmas, and I want to be able to make apps for my iPod Touch. I downloaded the iPhone SDK for Mac OS X Leopard (the OS that I have) and installed it. Fine up until this point. I started up XCode, clicked new project and the iPhone platform doesn't appear. Just Mac OS X. What have I done wrong?

PS: This is the first mac I have ever used apart from a little play on my friend's. I have no experience whatsoever with using a mac so you'll have to explain more complicated things to me.
