Your texture must be in a format like .tga (before converting to .blp) that supports alpha channels, otherwise it just appears black with .png or .jpg for instance
Possibly how the encoder is set. When saving/exporting a file there should be a button to set the various encoder properties. This can include if alpha is saved, the precision of alpha or pallet colours, e.t.c.
