If you would like to improve your icon, please do this

1. Shade and highlight the hat yourself, don't make gimp/ps do that.
2. Draw the line in the middle black
3. For the background, use smudge and eraser tool, make it flow smoothly

It looks like you just enabled bevel & emboss on the layer, you should smooth it up more, since cloth doesn't reflect light like that.

Try to redefine the shape of hat, it looks like it is squished by an invisible hand or something.
Edit: Try to create another background, this is a bit too simple.

You need to focus on your shading and where you place it, clean it up and make it seem more like a hat shape.
