Gold cost for using items

Is there any way to make an item cost gold to use, other than with triggers?
I tried with the "charge gold and lumber" ability being used as an item ability, but it just ends up showing in the units command card. Ideal would be if you could have cost shown in the items tooltip, but that is propably never gonna happen, right?
