I have gotten the first person view and the keyboard moving to work, but the camera always runs into the hills and doesn't stay level with the unit and I can't figure out how to make this work can anyone help?

My suggestion: Keep it that way!

When the camera goes THROUGH hlls and objects, that's when vision gets distorted or commands messed up (i.e. you think you clicked a ability on the ground, but actually it registeres on the hillside that the camera is currently INSIDE of...). The camera needs to bound over opbjects so players can retain full control.
