Does the AI buy from Shipyards?

I was working on a map today, and was placing the Goblem Shipyard building to buy mercenary ships from. Wanting to put AI players in the map, it lead me to wonder whether or not the AI actually buys them? Does anyone know if they do or don't? If not, is there a workaround in the AI preferences to make them? I saw that there is a setting called 'Buy Items', which I assume applies to the Arcane Vault, etc, but does this apply to mercenary shops as well?
