Sometimes, I like to print out a skin and either add details by hand, or trace the outline for a completely different hand drawn one. Then I scan it back to my computer. Does anyone else do this?

Well, there's this neat tool I got at a local store, that lets you draw on a touchpad screen. It replaces your normal monitor when you use it, and you can draw with different tools (with an interface like Photoshop or Gimp) directly onto images using an image editing program.

So, basically, you have a stylus, a touchpad monitor, and your picture, and you can draw onto it. This makes it a lot easier than drawing with a mouse, in my opinion.

PS: I also did a similar method once for a background I did.

I actually drew the shape and effects on my desk at school, and traced it with graphite paper and scanned it onto my computer, then touched it up a bit with Gimp.

Thats called a Graphics Tablet tonks..and dam, i want one of those..But from what i know 50% of people who have tablets use mouse to do skins/textures since tablets are used for more fluent things like in digital paintings.

Hell, I dunno the name
I find it a lot easier than a mouse, just because it's more like a pencil, and I'm more adept with a pencil. I got one with a fine-point stylus, so I can get really detailed. As in, if I zoom up a little bit, I can easily do pixel-by-pixel drawing.

mmm guys obvisly you rarly used a scanner before not to mention a really decen't scanner I can easily take a painting i made and scan it on my pc and make it look just as good as the real thing.

Personly it is a nice trick to do I mean I can sketch way better then draw on the comp.

I skin with a tablet, it speeds up skinning a lot. The only person I know who has a tablet and skins with a mouse is falco, from people that I know its not even close to 50%. I don't see why you wouldn't, I mean, it has no disadvantages that skinning with a mouse doesn't have.

If you scan an image it will lose some quality, unless you have a really really expansive scanner, and if you had one you would probably be able to get a tablet which is easier.

How is the mouse more precise? You have no more precision moving your cursor with the mouse than with a tablet. In my opinion the tablet is more precise since when you use a tablet you use a more standard drawing position allowing you more control.

oh and no matter what you CAN NOT get the same detail with traditional and scanner as you can with digital

Acutly its rather simple you just draw bigger then what the texture is. then shrink it on the comp. Alot of multimedia artist do this and then do touch-up with a paint software acutly a BIG career that does this is animators that make cartoons or anime.
