Is it better to alter the statistics of units that are standard to Warcraft III or to use new ones made from scratch? Is so what kind of benefits are we talking? Does one decrease load time over the latter or reduce map size?

In theory, creating new units increase the load time ever so slightly. However using widigitizer super increases the load time if you used custom units.

Custom Units (Not widigitized) Slow load
Modified Default Units (Not widigitized) Medium load
Custom/Modified Default (Widigitized) Fast load

So go download the widigitizer, it also functions as a protector, so only use it on your finished map.

what is wigitizer?

Also as for what Gasekura was saying, the only real advantage to making custom units is it can be easier to access all of them at once, while if you edit the standard ones they're all mixed in with other un-edited standard ones

Q: What is wigitizer
A: Ask to Google

Q: Does one decrease load time over the latter or reduce map size?
A: I think using 100000000 Custom Units will increase loading time by 1 second and Size by 10kb

Not true, 100 units will increase the load time by about 30 - 60 seconds. Depending on your computer. However, widigitizer heavily increases the efficiency of loading.

Not if you dont put them on map

Put all standart things (one footman one priest one wall one high elf structure etc) and see your loading time (it will take 10 minutes or more)

Its true, more units placed on the map will increase load time. But so will many custom units. Proof? If I import the units file from DoPRP8 (Which contains about 200 - 300 custom units) into a 32x32 custom map, it will still take a much longer then without the custom units.

This speed is increased greatly through the process of widigitizing. This is because it loads the custom units into .slk's which overwrite the default slks in the main mpq.
