How do you go along with creating custom armor and weapon types? I don't really think that Blizzards own armor and weapon type system make any sense at all.

All of it is under Advanced in the world editor.
Game Interface.
To replace the armor types there, all you have to do is import an armor/weapon icon and rename it with the same texture path as the one you want to replace. The data tables r under Gameplay Constants
