I wouldn't say it lacks creativity... Rather, it is very low-quality, and needs more definitive shapes, colors and 'feel' overall.

As i understand that icon shoul'd be something like a commandbutton for a high-tech maps. Why don't realise it in some HT style, with glow fx and some sort of HT FX? switch 2D looking to perspective 3D in some angle? Do you think, Stanakin, it will not response so much? Imo, it will be much better if choose on something like that. Much more lovely icon, and much more creative and beautiful at all

Yes, that's another way of doing it, which could look better. Still,this way is fine too, and might be preferred by some. I don't think he should completely redo his icon when there's nothing wrong with it except that it could be done better. (which is true for almost any icon)

This icon was meant to be simplistic, so that anyone unfamiliar with it could immediately grasp what it represents. I think it does that quite well.

As for "quality" and "creativity":
I have considered all suggestions, and now have a second version:
