enjoy: Looks more like an amulet. You almost got the shading right for a sphere though. Try looking at this.
Lava is more red, and doesn't light up as much.
Make the background darker, to make the orb stand out more.

Kind of looks like a "Blood Orb" to me, but still an aesthetically pleasing icon. 4/5!

To avoid the "blood look" (if you are willing to, of course), you could add some black lines and curves which are typical for lava similar to the references below:

If you decide not to do that - well, it still looks fine. When I saw it, I didn't think of blood, but I'll be honest - I didn't think of lava either.

First of all, thank you for your post full of useful criticism and references.
Second, I did indeed noticed the rather in-between look of my orb so far. Yes, I will take into account your words since I appreciate it.

About the darker colors, yes it could be done(as always ^^) and I will do some variations for this using this post you made some time.
