a background would be nice, as it is very empty now. a purple swirle perhaps, like it is getting confused

It doesn't look all that great. seriously. you know better than that. It lacks basic shading and highlights. it looks SO flat. almost too flat to comprehend. Stay away from solid colours. they make the icon/art look so simple and unattractive.

The concept isn't terribly, but there's several issues with the icon. It lacks any visible shading or highlights on the 64x64 version. I would not suggest you use white for the brain, but rather use a pinkish color. Some glow could be used to make the background a bit more interesting. The question marks look a bit unsteady.
