Well, since it was used by the CSA and KKK during and after the American Civil War, it has a slight bit of racist meaning attached to it, though the flag has been converted into more like a sign of rebellion lately. Since views on this flag differ (seeing that Mississippi is still using it although there have been several proposals to remove it), I have to consult others what their stance on this topic is.

Use some shading to achieve a better, cloth like look. There's quite a lot of tutorials explaining how to do that. If it's an armband, you might also want to detail the arm.
