Pretty much what you said. Thou there was one cool guy who is making an own game using wc3 engine, customized editor, and its looking great
Yet some other dudes are just ripping of icons also for own non wc projects etc.

Well I am upgrading my Missile engine (followed by the Aura one) to meet todays coding standards by myself
Then I will recreate the default spells of Wc3 heroes (to make it modular) and make a map that uses this (maybe something like creep wars).
So items that give bonus INT actually improve the spells. STR would make casted units stronger etc.
This way, the spells will all be still useful in late game, no matter whether you have stuff that is dynamic (critical strike) or bash (fix amount of bonus dmg), since it will all be dynamic.
