BIOME Series

It's that time of year again; time to start one of THW's well-known Techtree Contests! Contestants are to create a full-size Faction of their choosing that would (reasonably) be found in the chosen Biome. [[INSERT BIOME/CONTINENT DESCRIPTION HERE]]

This race must fit aesthetically, stylistically & thematically with the other 4 Factions of Warcraft 3. You will need to consider how that Faction balances with the other Factions and how it impacts the metagame of melee as a whole. It might sound scary, but with solid work and design you can pull through with a winner!

contest%20rules%20and%20conditions.png

Contest Rules:
  • Everybody is allowed and encouraged to enter, as long as they follow the rules.
  • One entry per person.
  • No submission may violate the Hiveworkshop Rules.
  • Any submission must follow a Work In Progress (WiP), before it is published and labelled as the final piece, so as to prove it's yours.
  • No team entries.
  • Triggers are allowed in any way, shape, or form in the development of your race.
  • Imports are Unlimited for this contest (see below for map-size constraints)
  • Any library or system in the resource database at the time of contest creation may be used in the development of your race. (This rule is also extended for the prototype Custom Race System in the current form submitted to the database. This exception is made because we realize the huge work involved with creating a race and I think this resource can simplify it tremendously)
  • Your submission may not be started/made before the official launch of the contest.
  • No 'dibs' on races. Multiple users may submit using the same race, though different techtrees. (No plagiarism, etc)
  • The features that may be edited are:
    • Gameplay constants
    • Game interface
    • Object editor
    • Trigger editor
    • Sound editor
  • The map's terrain may not be edited.
  • The current four melee races may not be edited; copy and paste the default units you are about to edit.

_______________________________________________

Faction Requirements:
  • The Faction must have a distinct Theme. This Theme is an important part of Faction design, and the faction & aesthetics must fit into its Theme.
  • The Faction must have a distinct Role. This Role is an important part of the Faction design, and the faction & gameplay style must fit into its Role. There is no defined Role for Faction in this contest, but you must create your own Role that would fit into the game.
  • The Faction should be balanced qualitatively and quantitatively as if it were a standard Faction in standard/ladder WC3 melee games.
  • Full-Race was chosen for this Contest, so:
    • 3 tiers per submitted race.
    • 4 heroes per submitted race.
    • 12 units per submitted race.
    • 10-11 structures per submitted race, fulfilling the classic roles:
      • Town Hall
      • Food Supply
      • Hero Altar
      • Troop Production
      • Defense (i.e. Towers)
      • Research
      • Item Purchase
_______________________________________________

Submission Rules:
  • When the Faction is complete, submit it to the Pastebin with the prefix [TECH9] and send me a private message with a link to the submission thread.
  • All submitted entries must use (4)TurtleRock.w3x as the test map. (Modified as necessary, but not with any drastic changes)
  • The map you submit your Faction in should be set up as a melee map so the Faction can be tested in a standard melee game; that means no cinematics or other extraneous additions, aside from:
    • Your custom Faction, it's custom spells/upgrades/buildings/units (and any triggering/OE-work necessary to accomplish them), etc (your submission, essentially).
    • All submitted entries must have a filename in the format:
      THW.TC9.<MyUserName>.<MyFactionName>.w3x
      Example: THW.TC9.Kyrbi0.Trolls.w3x
    • All submitted entries must have an in-game map name in the format:
      THW.TC9.<MyUserName>.<MyFactionName>
      Example: THW.TC9.Kyrbi0.Trolls
[*]All imported content may be no larger than 500kb.
  • Submitted maps may be no larger than 4MB.

_______________________________________________

contest%20judging%20and%20voting.png

Judging Criteria:
  • If more than 3 teams enter, the contest will enter into a public poll, which DEPENDS:
  • [[IF Multi-Vote Poll Method]]
  • In the poll, users can distribute two points among the contestants. A person can put 1 point towards two different teams or put 2 points towards any one team; it is the user's choice.
  • Each vote must be accompanied by a post detailing the reasons behind the post; missing posts or insufficient reasons will result in your vote not being counted! (At the discretion of the Host and/or Moderators)
[*]The teams with the highest points after the public voting stage (Up to 5 teams, depending on how many entries) will move on to be judged based on the criteria by a team of judges
  • [[IF Schulze Method]]
  • In the poll, users will have to rank the Factions from best to worst, ignoring any of the entries that they want to.
  • Clear instructions on how to vote will be posted the day the poll opens.
[*]The teams with the highest ranks (Up to 5 teams, depending on how many entries) will move on to be judged based on the criteria by a team of judges.
  • All points earned in each section of judging will be scaled to 1000 points and then weighted equally in the final tallying of points.
  • Judges will grade the final (up to) 5 Factions, giving weight to the following:

Design Criteria

  • [50] Points Total
  • ===
  • [10] Originality & Creativity:
How original the design of the Faction is in terms of creative ideas, clever implementations, or new concepts.
  • [10] Theme Coherence:
How well the various elements of the Faction (including aesthetics & design) fit together in a thematic manner such that they feel like they are representative of the given Faction (i.e. yes elves with bows, no demons using Divine magic, etc), as well as that of the chosen Contest Theme.
  • [10] Role Coherence:
How well the various elements of the Faction work together to achieve the tactical synergy & gameplay style the Faction has (i.e. melee-focused, hit-and-run, glass-cannon, etc).
  • [10] Melee Design Consideration:
Includes how well the Faction's Theme, Role & Originality fit into the melee environment in terms of balance, theme, style, complicatedness, and so forth.
  • [10] Awesomeness:
The most subjective of all grading criteria. This attempts to quantify exactly how awesome a Faction's overall design feels.

Theme:How well the various elements of the Faction (including aesthetics & design) fit together in a thematic manner such that they feel like they are representative of the given Faction, as well as that of the chosen Contest Theme. Well-fitting & polished aesthetics which complement a cohesive Theme will be graded well; poorly-considered or lacking Thematic elements will result in a poor score.10

Role:
How well the various elements of the Faction work together to achieve the tactical synergy & gameplay style the Faction has, as well as how well each element performs it's particular function. Comprehensive, well-though-out Roles which complement a cohesive Faction will be graded well; ill-considered, insufficient or over-compensating Roles will lose points.10

Balance:
Indicates how comparable the Faction is in terms of 'playability'; i.e. the ideal Faction should win/lose 50% of the time against others of it's class. Overpowered or Underpowered units/heroes/abilities/etc will result in a poor score; properly balanced elements will mean a good score.10

Creativity:
How original the design of the Faction is in terms of innovative ideas, clever implementations, or creative concepts. Innovation and creativity will be rewarded; re-use of existing elements & poor originality will result in a poor score.10

Awesomeness:
The most subjective of all grading criteria. This attempts to quantify exactly how awesome a Faction's overall design feels. This is the "subjective elbow room" for people to talk about how "cool" or "nifty" or "rad" the Faction is.5

Total points:
45
