Since they can't use elemental powers properly, shamans have resorted to fighting with their claws and ocassionally firing Lightning Bolts. After unlocking Shamans, at the beginning of each level, you can choose to replace your Grunts with Shamans, another option would be Ghouls. (Barracks units)
