Risen 1 is quite charming. It is similar to Gothic 1 in many ways: The dialogues are good, armor designs cool, faction war is similar to Gothic 1 with faction philosophies & characters sufficiently different, the island terrain is very cozy & a nice virtual space to hang out in, soundtrack lovely & memorable, and there's a mystery similar to the Sleeper's with the "Gyrger" (but not quite as great because the resolution is underwhelming).
Wouldn't bother with Risen 2/3, unless you like the cheesy Pirates of the Caribean vibes.
Never finished Gothic 3 because it was terribly optimized and not as captivating as 1 & 2.
Arcania's existance is widely ignored; it's one of those games where you can tell at first glance that it doesn't have the magic. The main character has an emo haircut.
