chimneys in the third image seem too big
and that spike that is closest to the camera rotates? or did you rotate the whole building accidentally?
otherwise looks pretty good to me
Yeah I wanted to have a more distinguishable silhuette that's why the chimneys are so big but I'll take into consideration. Oh, that spike it's just temporary I didn't have a chance to cleanup, tier2 and tier 3 are just mockups...I have this feeling like it's looking a little too orcish still, wondering what else I could add that will make it stand out as a troll building..
I keep running out of time to comment here, for which I apologize.
I did want to bring one thing up: I've been studying the standard faction's HQs for a while now (in order to help design a Troll one, natch), and I've found it's helpful to look at them all in sequence:
Ignoring the Night Elf (& kinda the Undead), you'll notice that there's usually a major structural difference between the first two Tiers & the last Tier. The Castle & the Fortress kinda pop in a way that the Keep & Stronghold don't. So don't be afraid to really go crazy on the last level.
Also, while leather makes perfect sense for Trolls, I would argue (& I have personally found) that for something to feel "Trollish" it's usually a couple of things:
- Wood (especially those big curved logs like in the Huts & the Voodoo Lounge)
- Stone (especially big ancient ziggurat-style meso-american 'mayincatec' architecture)
- Leather (some leather, like the Beta Troll Lumber Mill)
but also (& you touched on awareness of this), big on asymmetry.
^ I basically agree with Kyrbi0 here, but I will add a couple more things.
-The giant chimneys don't particularly scream "Troll" to me. It's giving me a Goblin vibe.
-Bone, skulls and shrunken heads are also fitting for trolls, as well as alchemical supplies, things-wot-to-do-Voodoo-with. Potions, dreamcatchers etc.
-The main issue, in my opinion, is that the primary structure does not change. It only has things added on top of it. As Kyrbi0 said, the Castle is not reusing parts of the Keep. The Fortress looks very different from the Stronghold, etc. Something is added which isn't just "more of the same" - they utilize a different material or structure, they add new patterns. Your 3 tiers look too similar to eachother as it stands.
-I will also add that size and shape-wise it looks a little too simple. This reminds me of the Orc Burrow in a big way, and maybe like a smaller Barracks. Whereas a Town Hall needs to be BIG and stand out, even on the first tier.
Adding objects around your structure or underneath it might help elevate it. Give it a fence that gradually turns into a wall, for example. Banners, pillars, effigies, totems. Something to make it more than just a hexagonal hut.
