I advise looking at how the Zerg buildings upgrade and trying to port that to what you are after.
What I can tell you is you will have to add the button to the unit and attach the correct stuff to it (upgrade related stuff).
Next you have to modify the target units actor and the previous units actor so that on upgrade the previous unit kills its model while the upgrade type unit creates its model. This is important as it is not enabled for all actors by default.
