Upgrade System

Can someone give me an upgrade system.For example I buy an item and then buy ''damage bonus'' and my item gets +3 damage.(Also I want it only to work for swords.Lets say campaign type items)

you'll need to create each individual upgraded item at every step if you want it to be permanent

Store a value in the Item's custom value, apply the right abilities to the unit when the unit picks up the item.
