Photoshop help

Is it possible to make an image that does not have a transparent background have one?

I have a pic, ugly background (plain white) Is it possible to make the pic have a transparent background, so i can have my own background?

Wrong section,

and... i don't use photoshop...but i think you select the bg(easier if its all one colour) and press delete or using the eraser tool and go over the background might help. A checker board should mean that its transparent.
Gif. and png. to my knowledge support transparency.
