They were named liked that because in-game they are summoned units, and as thus their death animation must be this 'lightning poof' thing.

I think that if a model has a proper death animation, and is used as a summonable, something weird happens when they die, like the lightning poof and they die normally. Might be that was the way before the programing overhaul that war3 went through some time in development, and the modelers and such just stuck to the habit of fucking over good models to work with the outdated system.
