Hey guys! love the community here. Lots of really talented folks :)

I am just recently getting interested in checking out custom stuffs for wc3. I have gotten a couple of models to work after following tutorials here on the site.

I don't understand modeling at all, so please forgive me.

I downloaded http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/models.php?id=gtaa8u&p=tutorial_import

and wanted to attach it to another model, say a paladin. I tried to follow the tutorial, but it is showing a peasant? Is it attaching it to a peasant, or is it replacing the peasant?

I've also read some stuff about connecting points (or something like that) which I didn't really understand either.

Any help would be AWESOME. thanks in advance, guys/gals

Hi Geeswell,

1. You have imported the model into the map (as well as the texture). You now have a functioning model. It doesn't matter that it is supposed to be used as an attachment, a model is a model. Inside the object editor, you could use it to replace any other model (inside doodads, units, spells). If you replace the model file of the unit 'Peasant' with your imported model file, for instance, peasants will be replaced by walking hammers.

2. To use a model as an ATTACHMENT for a unit, I usually create a new ability. There are good tutorials for that: http://world-editor-tutorials.thehelper.net/attachments.php (sorry I didn't find those featured on the hive right now)

The "connection points" you were talking about are 'Attachment points", absolutely necessary to add attachments. Many abilities require attachment points as well.
What are they? They are points on the 3D-model on which you can put effects (that includes "attachments" like your hammer). All of the original Warcraft III models (and good quality models on teh Hive) for units should already have all the attachment points you need (hand left and right, head, overhead, origin, foot, chest etc.), so you don't need to add them yourself. When you create your own 3D-model files from scratch, however, you will also have to create new attachment points.

In your case, if you want to see the attachment in the claws of a paladin, you will have to give the paladin an ability that makes him display this model in his hand as an "effect" (or create an item which will display the model in the paladin's hand once he has picked it up). The tutorial above should show you how to do that.
Most of the time Warcraft III units already have weapons. So for example your paladin would hold the hammer AND his original weapon in the same hand, which might look stupid. That you can only overcome if you pick a 3D-model for your unit that has empty hands (there are several in the game and on the Hive)- or you learn how to edit model files and skins.

Verdun,

Talk about fantastic! thank you very much for taking the time to explain that simply :) you did a great job. I'll goof around as you suggested! I spent hours DL some of the models on this site and have been having fun playing around with them. SO thank you and thanks to everyone else on their great work!
