To do things the right way, the first step is imho to encourage people to download the versions of the classic games Blizzard makes freely available to download (WC3 v1.27a, Diablo 2 v1.14b, StarCraft v1.15.2) from Blizzard's own servers, regardless of whether they want to install them or not afterwards. People must absolutely *not* download them from any unauthorized (and therefore illegal) mega link or similar

It is *extremely* important to do things that way.

Your point?

It's essential for this community to be able to run older versions of the game, especially when Blizzard released an unfinished game. As long as it's not actual piracy, it's fine.
The worst thing Blizzard did was to release a broken game and force everyone onto it. The fact that people can still use 1.31 somehow is a godsend. Down the line we'll want people to use the latest version of the game but right now, it's good they keep interested.
If the threads contain cd keys, please report the post and share a screenshot of you showing the cd key in the folder. We will make sure they are then removed.

Oh, and how about copyright infringement then?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringement

WC3 has never been freely redistributable to begin with in any shape or form, except for the demo version of the game, as long as its original files are complete and unmodified.

Homemade CD-ROM images are illegal for redistribution, it is for Blizzard to create and provide them on any of their official distribution sites.

Already Installed versions are illegal for redistribution, period.

Did Blizzard approve of any of these uploads? I want to see such written proof.

Considering some of said uploads had a DMCA strike recently and the uploader made provisions to escape it, even trying to involve me in a *crime* and later calling me obnoxious for not participating in said criminal activities, I think not.

Only the full 1.27a digital version (which is an 'a2' version btw) can be legally downloaded, and it must not be downloaded from any other source. Only from Blizzard's official servers

If I were Blizzard, I would be horrified at how many liberties are taken here with the WC3 Intellectual property, and this would damage my trust in the site.

Regarding running older versions of the game ranging from 1.27b down to 1.10 (and down to 1.00 with an official legally bought v1.0x CD-ROM), please read my own advice here:

works superbly btw.

Did any game company approve of model rips officially and on paper?

@deepstrasz : still waiting for your answer. Preferably one with words.

How does it relate to the picture you linked to?

It was a reply to your last messages.
I'm not commenting on the picture. It's self evident.

@deepstrasz : again:

It is for Blizzard to redistribute (or not) any of their own content, because it is *theirs*, and *not* ours. Now, what we can do in a positive way is to approve of the availability of the full 1.27a digital version, for other versions to hopefully be available someday, provided Blizzard gives a damn about the WC3 modding community.
...
... and seeing how said community behaves with their IP and how it reacts when legal points are raised, well...
...
... btw hi @Strydhaizer , how's tricks?

@deepstrasz : maybe not for everybody. So please explain you point

It's an illusion if you think they will release post 1.27 official links when even these 1.27 links are hard to find as if they are hidden.

I have to ask, pyf, what is the reason for this?
Do you want that people stop modding on any 1.28-1.31 version?
Yes, we all would prefer an official solution. No, we do not want to support piracy - and we do not.
There is no official way and none of us can influence that, so what is it that you want us to do?
pyf
pyf
@deepstrasz: Just like SC Patch 1.17.0, or any of their other content (generally stored on their pseudo-ftp), it *is* here regardless.

I think they silently 'opened the barn door' for selected versions of their classic games (SC, WC3, and D2), to monitor how people will react, and if these older versions are *really* desired. To be clear: it's a *test*, and we are close to not pass it.

Shar Dundred, you mentioned the current state of the game. But one must not forget that this has been the case since years. Except with v1.27, for this version iirc has been criticized _not_ because of any bugs, but because of its lack of (perceived) new worthwhile features. Therefore, it is the version which gathered the least hate from players and modders.
pyf

... and now that everybody can download it, how many give a damn? "Bring back Classic" they yell on the Battle.net forums. Well, Classic has been here for everybody since at least the same time v1.32.0 was launched.

Now it is part of our 'job' to spread that knowledge, and give support to Blizzard's (imho clever) decision. Because THW is a pro-Blizzard site.
...
... maybe.
deepstrasz
deepstrasz
No. Classic (1.27) does not support Battle.net anymore. End of discussion.
