You reach this area during a quest. You will find a man trapped in a web. When you talk to him you are attacked by spiders that come out of the caves. Once they are killed you have to fight an Elite before you can advance.

Ya I've been trying to think of a couple of abilities for the elite spider that aren't the generic spider boss abilities. Maybe they are just used all the time because they are the best ones...
