@Quinten The big black thing is the outer walls of Angband built at the base of Thangorodrim. It's Black because Angband (Angband is Sindarin, and means "Iron Prison" or "Hell of Iron", from ang + band.) was made of brass and wrought iron and was the dark fortress of Morgoth the first Dark Lord of Middle-Earth. Think Barad-Dur, the Tower and Fortress of Sauron, from the Lord of the Rings.
