shading & smoothing groups

Is there a good tutorial on here about shaders and smoothing groups. I have a test texture and it is pretty clear that there is "flat shading" (i.e. the shader is not smoothing shadows around edges). I am using 3DS max and have tried the shaders Blinn and Phong. I have not really done much with what are called smoothing groups. Can someone explain what they do in general?


nevermind I found a good tutorial on youtube.
