Avatar 0.59

James Cameron's A V A T A R,
the warcraft 3 map, by Dj0z.

This map reuses the universe from the movie and the Xbox360 game, to make something unique.
Some things may vary from the original movie/game, for the sake of gameplay and/or technical reasons.
Only the introduction is predefined, how it ends will depend on how good you fight.

Story
(/!\ SPOILERS WARNING)

Pandora: In the Alpha Centauri star system, a moon called Pandora is home to an overscaled flora, fauna, and the Na'vi people.
They're a race of sentient, civilized humanoids, way less technologically advanced than humans. The fact that they live in constant harmony with nature probably kept them away from this need.

Eywa is Pandora incarnate. The Na'vi believe that Eywa's actions keep all life on Pandora in a perfect equilibrium.

R.D.A.: The human R.D.A. (Resources Development Administration) has sent a large deployment on this planet to gather the precious room-temperature supraconductor mineral called Unobtanium. It's the key to solve the energy crisis that mankind found itself in.
Because of the extremely dangerous nature of the pandorian environment, operations are under heavy military protection.

Avatar: Planning to use diplomacy in order to obtain peaceful cooperation from the Na'vi, the R.D.A. has genetically engineered hybrids of Human and Na'vi races, called the Avatars. Their external appearance is mostly Na'vi.

Roles
Gameplay changes COMPLETELY from one role to another. Play as:

  • One of the four Human R.D.A. Corporations (Corps):
Benefiting from their advanced technology, the Corps can build large and heavily defended bases providing protection from the deadly environment of Pandora.

By using their different types of factories and their spaceships, they are able to build up powerful forces with world-shattering firepower.

They apply organized military strategies, so their soldiers, mechas, vehicles, aircrafts, but also stationary weaponry and long-range artillery can eliminate any opposition, including Eywa itself.

  • One of the four Avatars:
Taking advantage of both their human and na'vi advantages, the Avatars follow their instincts to guide them on Pandora.

Making use of plants, animals, and everything they can find including human weapons, they train their survival skills to the level where this hostile planet becomes a paradise for them.

Gathering forces from the whole environment, including the Na'vi, they eventually unite the planet in the righteous war against the human invader.

  • Eywa, the omnipresent overmind of the planet:
A true living entity worshipped as a deity by the Na'vi protects Pandora.

As the reckless Corps pillage, kill, and destroy, Eywa gets stronger and uses its planetary powers to stop them, before everything is ruined forever.

Features

  • A ton of carefully selected and exploited imports (models, icons, music etc...) provide an astounding gaming experience.

  • Alot of custom systems using vJASS, JASS, hashtables and GUI:

  • Units have alot of custom abilities and effects.

  • Advanced unit-item interactions:
    -Some units will drop their weapon (e.g. Flamethrower for Firebats) upon death, or when Disarmed by a special action;
    -You can pick up items on the ground to use them directly (like Avatars using dropped Rocket Launchers) or to change job (like Workers becoming Privates by grabbing SubMachineGuns);

    -You can mass-train workers into soldiers instantly in two clicks, with whatever type of weapon you want;
    -Soldiers can drop their weapons to become Workers, if you want to repair/build something for example;

  • Inventory systems:
    -The items a unit can use are restricted by the unit's type;
-A unit cannot have weird amounts of some items, depending on where they are held: for example an Avatar has 2 hands, so it cannot have 2 lances + 1 shield at once.

  • Exclusive custom projectile system for many units:
-For example: 30mm Autocannon users can miss depending on distance to target, and in that case their bullets can deal collateral damage.
-Projectiles like bullets can also Ministun certain types of enemies, and score Headshots on independent types of enemies.
-Projectiles like Missiles can knockback enemies where they land, deal mixed damage (siege + molecular, at once), etc...
-Some units can shoot multiple individual projectiles at once, not based off warcraft's lame multishot ability, not 1 projectile with a model that looks like multiple projectiles either.
For example, a Scorpion assault copter shooting two 30mm bullets plus two micromissiles, all behaving differently, yet all shot at the same time.

  • Riding System:
-You can make your Avatar mount an Animal. it will carry your Avatar around but they remain separate units able to perform actions individually.
For example while your ridden Toruk unit is chasing an aircraft, you can attack something else with your hero Avatar by throwing glaives, you can use your items, Persuade a unit, as if you were on the ground.

  • Custom Dollars (gold) and materials (wood) gathering systems:
-Build metal extractors for materials, then forget about them, they'll keep providing you with materials while you focus on the action. You can also space-drop some from your I.S.V. spaceship (more info about this abit below).
-Dollars (gold) is mainly obtained by exploiting Unobtanium Deposits not very fast with some workers, or dramatically faster when you manufacture dedicated vehicles that can just rip it off the ground and deliver it directly. You can also use space drops for this resource.

  • Quests for both sides, especially for Avatars, who have an RPG gameplay.

  • Mecha system (A.M.P. suits): Put your human soldiers and heroes in robots.
Each type of foot unit gets its own corresponding type of AMP (a Firebat will get a robot with a flamethrower, a Rocket Trooper will get another type of robot, that shoots rockets, etc...)

  • Spaceship drops system: obtain more personnel or resources from your I.S.V. very fast, anywhere you or any ally have built a Space Pad at.

  • Custom camera system:
-Use any zoom from "almost touching the ground" to "orbital height", abit like in Supreme Commander the actual game (except units don't become just colored icons).
-Rotate the camera in all 4 cardinal directions fast and easily by just hitting keyboard shortcuts (toggleable).

  • Avatars special stats:
-Understanding of Flora/Fauna/Na'vi/Humans: Obtained via killing, using Discover/Interact or performing special actions, they unlock new possibilites in their respective domains.
For example you can play an Avatar focusing on harassing Humans. You'll increase your Understanding in that domain by doing so, and unlock new possibilities like Breaking AMP weapons or Sabotaging Corp buildings.
Another example: you can focus on Understanding Animals and become able to Persuade increasingly strong beasts, in larger amounts, and get better items from them.

-Charisma: obtained by killing units yourself, will increase your Persuasion capability.

  • Living and dynamic environment:
    -Trees regrow from their stumps when cut down, these stumps can be destroyed forever by R.D.A. workers;
-Trees can cause special effects, like clouds of acid or mist disabling ranged attacks...
    -Animals respawn from their natural habitat, which can be destroyed forever;
-Animals have specific behaviours depending on their types, they can be captured by avatars or controlled by Eywa.

  • and much more...

Well, Dj0z, I know I've promised making a review as soon as I get Warcraft on my PC. So, I got it and... I can't really say a thing, because the map really improved since the last time I've played, and I feel that I can't say anything to improve it, because it's already awesome :D. So I won't make a review, but I'll give ya +rep :D

Haven't been able to get the other versions since .37, so here's what I think of it so far as I get used to the new systems:

* Terrain is nice, still a little monotonous in places, and I hope the Hallellujah Mountains will have more detail. But more interesting, that's for sure.
* I think the Corps buildings should be greyed out, with the requirements listed in the tooltips, rather than given one by one. The current system is very counterintuitive.
* Maybe use a different model for the Rocket and Firebat? The Orc Firebat was a good one, I don't think there's any reason to change it...

Good to see you're not gone to SC2, i was starting to wonder if all the reviewers had moved out...
*Glad you like the terrain, and yea i'm adding some detail to it every now and then.
*I had already figured that out because of the extreme confusion of players, and it will be this way soon as i finished debugging 0.46.
*Well the firebat is the one who can hardly see the weapon of :D but more seriously, yea i'll try to find models that dont look alike. I'm just trying to remove the "orc" skins since some people care about it.

I'm not leaving to SC2 :)

Anyways, 0.45 is very nice :D! I liked the quests you must do first as a Corps. Seems so cool :D

Nice ^^ i have 0.46 ready where i have made these Corp quests more player-friendly (and debugged/improved many other texts) so you should like it too ^^. I haven't uploaded it yet to the hive cuz 0.45b is still in frontpage, the update would be unnoticed lolol.
It seems to have reached it's point (helping newcomers and explaining them the game), as long as they care to read the questboard ofc.

Nice map, i love it, but i have a few suggestions:

Man, please, explain better the start, as a human or as an avatar for the first time i was really confused, i took 30 minutes to start about how to play and etc...

Just this, explain better our fuctions too and more detailed description about the quests ( i stayed a really good time looking for the ''special menu'' ;p

Glad you like the map :) i'm trying to make it easier to understand ever single version, but sometimes i wonder why i'm writing tips everywhere when players just don't read >.> ..
Still, your comments points out something that needs improvement so it's gonna help me :)

Hey Dj0z. First of all, kudos to you for making this great map. I haven't tested it extensively yet, but I did notice something right away during the last few games I've played with this map. I'm not sure if this has been posted of before (I didn't bother to read the other 23 pages), but it seems like it is very easy to swarm an R.D.A. base with lots of animals. I haven't noticed any sort of limit as to how much animals you can control, so you can just bide your time taming more and more animals, and then just swarm the R.D.A. base. Because of the R.D.A. limit, they won't have enough units to fend off the attack. Would this not happen with pro R.D.A. users or is it a weakness of the R.D.A. that the Avatars can take advantage of?

Rating:
5/5. Nice work. :)

A few thoughts:

* During the RDA's set-up phase, could you maybe ping the locations you're supposed to reach (Na'vi, stone, etc.)?
** Also, when building the first extractor, point out what you need to do by adding, say, (Use Interact on suspicious-looking ground) at the end.
* Any chance of having Interact as an immediately accessible ability (instead of in another menu) for the commander?
* Make drones transportable, as gatherers they need protection.
* I like the artillery unit, but there should be one icon each for the firing modes.

* If you go to a Hometree too soon as an Avatar, the message about the questbox pops in during the cutscene (I like the dumbass radio operator in that one).
* It might be a one-time thing, but I got to 20 animal kills (and animal neutrality) without getting the "animals are now neutral" message.
* There should be some kind of message and Interact reaction for the powerstones.
* The avatar floats a few feet off his ride (it's particularly bad with Titanotheres: sometimes he cruises along far above it, sometimes he's inside it like a horrifying teleporter experiment.)
** The problem with dropping items still occurs (the ride doesn't budge if the item is dropped too far away)
** It still looks weird to have the avatar levitate himself upwards to ride (then again, he also floats above his ride. Who knew avatars had psychic powers?)
* There are many "check the list of bonuses" messages, but the only Na'vi bonus to show up in the list is the War Speech (and as far as I can tell there's only four Na'vi bonuses to be had).

* General: Could you make some kind of (optional) camera system around the central cliffs so the camera stays level over the huge dips? Otherwise, you can't keep track of your units, how they're positioned, if they're being attacked, etc.

Hey Vardix :) and thanks.

There is actually no limit to how many animals you can control, other than the limit of animals of that type alive on the map. When you kill animals, some others of that type will respawn over time but it doesnt apply when you capture them.
So yea it is pretty efficient to swarm RDA base with animals, especially if you have hammerheads. The RDA have strong defense guns though, and they don't cost food, so with proper defenses you won't be able to raze the whole base in 1 go even with all the animals on the map. It's a matter of how fast you manage to do it, too.
As for food, being outnumbered despite being individually stronger, was clearly a major factor of the RDA defeat so here it shall be too.

* General: Could you make some kind of (optional) camera system around the central cliffs so the camera stays level over the huge dips? Otherwise, you can't keep track of your units, how they're positioned, if they're being attacked, etc.

*Not planning to ping the locations, else players will obviously all go to the same one (the closest) and the "exploration" part will lose some of its sense.
**I have removed the "Find metal" quest in 0.49. That part was causing way more trouble than i expected, it seemed totally away of player intuition to use interact on the ground. Even though that ground was custom import by me (so basically it shoulda looked new and intruiguing, yet seemed to blend in the default tiles barely noticed...) and even though there Was such a tip ("open the menu, use interact, metal ground looks like this and that...").
*Interact (Corp version) is purely a quest ability currently, you use it very few times and it does nothing xcept completing quests. So there's no point in using the "front page" for it.
*You have a point, even though there is drone burrow, it isn't exactly the same thing, is it. As vehicles they are already transportable, by the vehicle transporter (namely, Valkyrie, Unob-unlocked) but i guess i could make a ground vehicle transporter too... we'll see.
*The problem with that ability is: it has 3 levels. If i make it different abilities that replace each other, when you select many MLRS, none of the icons will show and you won't be able to control their firing modes at all. When it's just 1 ability that is capable of having different icons (so that it shows when many MLRS are selected), the options are limited to 2, like immolation and such ( 1 icon "ON", 1 icon "OFF", kthxbai :/ ).
So until i can find something better that works with multi selection, it will stay that way.

*Yeah, this is fixable and will be sometime.
*Can you remember if it was just delayed or if you never actually obtained animal neutrality?
*There will be Interact effects and messages for everything :)
*Well, experimental system is experimental. I've seen such a system nowhere else so i have little available help regarding this. For ground riding it causes that because of how w3 handles height of flying and ground units differently, but it's purely graphic, unlike the bugs caused by the other possible ways to do the ground riding system.
**Dropping items has an orderID that i didn't manage to detect, so unless some pro can tell me how i detect that i won't be able to attach any reaction to it.
**:D yea i'll fix that sometime, once again it's purely graphic so, not hurrying. And we could pretend he just used a rope or something?
*There are actually only 6 bonuses total to be gotten so far. Alot more will be added on the go.

*General: i guess i see what you're talking about. I usually just do -cam 3400 to make it almost unnoticeable but i'll see if i can find something more automated.

THIS IS EPIC!!!! love how the way u created a space like environment & the hallelujah mounts... those are just way too epic!!! the models, the environments & the gameplay is totally epic!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only sad thing, no AI.... that must be hard for ya... i know the pain to make a good ai...

4.95/5
+rep!

GJ, & keep it up!

:D thanks, i spent more than a whole week on experimenting with terrain, modeling and skinning techniques to get this result for the Hallelujah Mountains alone.

About AI, i'm not an AI coder but i'm almost certain that will all the custom systems it would take forever to make a working AI for that map, if it's even possible.

For the animal neutrality message: it never showed up, they suddenly became neutral once I killed my twentieth animal (I think it was a crab).

For the artillery: But can't you use the same system as for the space drop, where the icon changes to show what's going to drop?

One thing that came to mind: Maybe put some kind of information on which Na'vi clan you're talking to (for example, now entering Hallelujah mountains, now entering Sky Clan village, now entering...).

Mmm... okay. That definitely clears things up a bit. I thought that the Avatar animal swarming technique made the map a little unbalanced for the R.D.A., but now that you've explained it, I see what you have to do to survive those swarms. Also, thanks for these constant new updates. Gives me something to do on my free time.

Other: Gave you a rep point for clearing up my questions about this map, and for making this map so awesome.

Oh my God

My god, this game looks absolutely amazing. The models have great detail and the skill/train system sounds phenominal. I can't believe the amount of time it must've taken to develop this game. Bravo Dj0z, bravo.

Hi everyone, no the project isn't stopped at all. Thanks for the support though, it is really encouraging :).
I have just moved to a new town and i don't have internet yet there. I'll be back in 2 weeks so then i'll be able to finish the map.
I have SC2 now so i don't know yet what i'm gonna be doing in the near future (when i have internet again ofc).

@Sasuhkun: btw the hippogryph mounting system isn't what i'm using in the map. I created a whole new mechanism.

Well, whatever is your choice, you did an outstanding job so far, and I bet you will make another awesome in SC2.

Some of the skins were made by myself, like the na'vi archer and the Avatar, but for the others you need to check out the credits and look for the ones you want to know about.
About the rocket trooper that is a model, but it goes the same way: check out the credits. Incase it isn't exactly clear who did who there, you should search in the models section of this website.

Since i'll be on holidays soon, map development will resume shortly :)
I'll check that out and fix that, as well as any other errors i may find.

I plan to continue and finish the map (version 1.0) reasonably fast soon as i have the free time. This doesn't necessarily mean that there will be no updates after version 1.0 .

Thank you!

Wondering a new version of Avatar:grin:

Also wondering that what is 'Mantis Quattro'?
Is that means a mantis with four legs?:eekani:

I guess that's just a cool name.

Yup Mantis Quattro is a four-legged human vehicle, the fattest you can get. It uses the Prowler model from this site's models page.

About the new version, i've done some changes that should make the game easier and abit faster for everyone. I am still struggling to get my autohosting to work on this new computer though so i don't know when it will be playable.

Hi Dj0z!
Your AVATAR map is excellent. :) I played the RDA and the Avatar race, too, but i prefer the Avatar race. The avatar and the Toruk Macto models are cool, where did you get them?
The abilities, the terrain, models, multiboards and cinematics are nice and awesome, too. Where did you get the portrait of Neytiri (cinematic)?
Actually, AVATAR is my most favourite fim, i think it is yours favourite, too.
I suggest only one thing: make a Quaritch model, too (or a skin which has Quaritch's face only).
I rate that map 5/5 and keep it up. +rep.
