I think Dio is right that the models should have a comparable structure, but they should also leave some variety.

could be a good models pool, but at the end you, the texturers have to decide. :)

Another idea occurred to me, though it requires two textures and therefore might be null from the start, but how about a soldier and commander kind of theme? The two textures have to have similar colour schemes and even designs, but still appear of different ranks. To spice things up, maybe limit each contestant to one model, thus forcing him to be think about how to make the two textures stand out from each other.

Just a thought, but maybe contestants have to take a custom model from one of hive's very own Model Moderators and reskin it.

Just a thought...

Just pulled my favourites out of the delightfully long list of themes assembled by Dio:

Metal - turn a unit into a metal band mascot!
Two for One - make two units in the same style.
jigraeljigraeljigrael - I actually have no comment for this.
Specific cultures (egyptian, persian, romans, etc.) - this is quite sexy.

Specific Race - Not the most innovative idea, but always a solid choice.

Skin Two Models to Fit Together - I like this theme a lot, but I fear most people wouldn't see it through.

Morphing Units - Another cool theme, with a similar pitfall with dealing with 2 textures.

Neutral - Some nifty choices here.

Bosses - Could be badass.

Mutated - May need a little clarification, but some good potential.

Creep Warlords - Sweet.

Creep => General Race - TONS of choices here.

I dunno. Given how the last contest turned out, you can't even be sure who's participating and who isn't. So yeah, go ahead.
EDIT: Anyway, might as well list my own preferences.
Clown: could actually be fun. Certainly could yield weird skins.
Ghost/Vampire theme: opportunity for more mysterious undead skins, as opposed to just blegh rusty armour and all that.
Two similar textures: I am all for this idea, though others may not be as enthused by the prospect of making two textures.
Friendly/Skin a unit into a villager: certainly something I'd like to try. Basically texture something into a peaceful human/humanoid/whatever.
Bosses: I just like the idea.
Creep Warlords: Yep, sounds cool.
Creep => General race: same as above.

I like the idea of turning one skin into 2 to differentiate their rank/importance whatever. Considering a few choice hue/saturation changes and changing up around 10% of the detail could pull off a solid distinction I don't think it's to much to ask. To designate one unit is better maybe the theme could be centered around upgrading the unit (knight-->paladin, ogre-->ogre magi).

The Creep Warlord and Two Skins For One Model themes are quite similar. Main difference being that Creep Warlord is limited to existing creep races. I mean, making a basic unit and an upgraded version of it on the same skin is piece of cake (just look at how many skins I've done for the Forest Troll model).

Yes, that's basically what I thought, too. But it might be seen as a chore by some and, considering we have few contestants as is, might not be worth the risk. [trauma after #20]

Well, now that Starcraft 2 came out I don't foresee this site getting much more participants for contests, WC3 has been out for almost a decade now as well. 5 entries seems relatively standard. And hey, it's better than 1.

I think giving pms or vms to a lot of texture artists right when a new contest is hosted and asking them to join could boost the amount of participants/capable judges we get though. Normally I've found ~half the people that enter actually finish something, so if we could get 20 people to enter...

Another will come up, Dentothor, as soon as the current is done. Decide if it's going to be Creep Warlord or Two Skins For the Same Model (one being the upgraded version of the other). I will delay until I have at least five people agreeing for either theme (after this post), earliest possible hosting on Thursday this week. Also, if anybody feel like announcing this through PMs (or contacting otherwise) once it's up, please do.

You mean using parts of old skins in a submission? That's a no-go. All material used in your entry has to be made from when the contest opens. If you mean using parts of the lesser unit in the upgraded unit (when talking about two skins for the same model); that's the whole idea. They need to resemble each other and what better way than to keep some of it either exactly the same or recoloured. Bear in mind I'm still looking to see at least 50% change to the upgraded unit. Simply recolouring your skin and adding a logo won't cut it.
