I did not know it, yet I doubt it has much pratical use. The alternative is to set max life to <= 0. If you add max hp via trigger then, the unit becomes mortal. This is not the case with the method here, but in exchange you cannot sensefully use hitpoints or would have to resort to expensive triggering to make up for it. At this point you can as well control the other option.
