First time modeling

Hi this is my first try at modeling, but it is all pretty difficult for me.
I read the tutorials all, but still im confused about a lot of stuff

example, i made this model in 3ds max 2009:

Now, when i click on Export Texture it gives me over 30 tga files.. ? Also the skin itself is giving me a hard time (look at these horns for example)
How would i make only one texture for the complete building, like every warcraft skin? That would be so much easier.

I tried this "geomerging", but i am clueless about it..

Now besides this, when i do File -> Export and save it as .3ds then transfer it to a .mdx file, it still doesnt work ingame.. any help would be so nice

Also i think i will have questions on animation, but that will be for a later time.
It sounds so dumb but I'm used to only photoshop and i want to learn modeling also, Thanks :)
